Things to Know

August 11, 2014

Dear Linda Herrington Families,

Welcome to the school year 2014-2015!  I want to warmly welcome back our returning students and their families and would like to extend a special welcome to our new students and families. We hope you are enjoying your summer and are looking forward to the first day of school on August 26.  We are very excited about the upcoming school year.  Lots of interesting and enriching learning experiences are being planned, and we look forward to working with you in making this year the most successful ever.

I want you to know how honored I am to continue serving as the principal for Herrington Elementary.  It is hard to believe that this year will be our fourth year.  It just seems like yesterday that we opened.  The Herrington community is still growing, growing, growing.  When we opened three years ago, we opened with exactly 600 students.  This year we are already well over 800 and enrolling more students every day.  If you know of any new families in our neighborhood, please share this information with them or have them come to our school between 8:00 am to 3:00 pm to register. It is important to get our enrollment numbers as accurate as possible, as we are watching our class sizes very closely.  With this growth, we are adding more classes and will be revisiting the traffic pattern.   In addition, we will be making some changes to our Open House/Back to School Night on Aug. 22, 2014.  Please be looking for future emails, to provide more details on these changes.

Our theme this year is “Growing Super Citizens”.   We will be looking for ways to make learning more authentic and provide opportunities for our students to make connections between their learning and the real world.  We are looking forward to showcasing special community helpers throughout the year and exploring ways to positively impact the community around us.

Parents and guardians who provide email addresses on student registration forms will AUTOMATICALLY receive eNews communications that are sent by Herrington and Round Rock ISD. Additional family members who wish to receive these communications should sign up at this site:

Sept. 5 – Coffee with the Principal

I invite parents to have “Coffee with the Principal” on the first Friday of every month from 8:00-8:30 am.  This is a time when we discuss current Herrington events and encourage parents to ask questions about our school.  It is a great time to get to know me while learning about the happenings at Herrington.

First Week Information

The first days of school are always busy. We will open the doors on school days at 7:15 am.  On the first day of school, all students will go directly to their classrooms.  Below is our morning arrival and dismissal schedule for all other school days:

Arrival:

Doors open at 7:15 am and students go straight to classroom/common area or cafeteria.  Breakfast will be served from 7:15 – 7:35 am.

  • All car rider students will enter the building through the north entrance.  Parents will enter the drop off lane from CR 117.  Staff will be on duty to open doors and help students out of cars.  At 7:45, after the tardy bell, staff will return to the building.  If you arrive after 7:45, please go around to the front of the building.
  • All walking students will enter the south entrance that is close to the track.  Parents who wish to park and walk students into the building must park on the street and walk their students across the street at the crosswalk.
  • Only bus and daycare riders enter the front parking lot between 7:15 and 7:45.  They will enter through the front doors next to the office.

Dismissal:

All students leaving school early must be signed out in the office.  In order to check out a student, the individual must be listed on the registration form, emergency form, and/or the “Who Can Pick Up My Child Form”.  If the individual is not listed, the student will not be released unless the office has been notified otherwise.  Any individual checking out a student must provide identification before the student will be released from school, so please have your picture ID with you.  Whenever possible, dental and doctor appointments should be made outside of school hours.

  • If you are driving to pick up your child:  the teacher will provide a manila folder with the car rider’s last name and grade level.  Please place this on the passenger side dashboard, visible to staff members.  To accommodate siblings, the teacher of the youngest child in each family will give parents the folder with the youngest grade level specified only.  During dismissal, older siblings will go and wait with their youngest sibling in order to keep them together.  Parents will enter through the parent pick up lane on CR 117 and drive to next cone available to pick up their children.
  • If you are walking/parking-and-walking to pick up your child at the end of the day:  please wait on the south side of the building by the bike rack.
  • Bikers and bus riders will exit the building through the front entrance.

There is a map enclosed that will explain the traffic pattern for arrival and dismissal.  Please adhere to this traffic pattern to help us move the line along as we respect your time and want to get all the students in and out of their cars quickly and safely.   Please be patient as pickup is always super busy the first few weeks of school. Also, remember that cell phone use while driving in a school zone is prohibited.

As you prepare your children for the beginning of school, please remember the district’s policy on appropriate dress. Detailed lists are included in the RRISD Student-Parent handbook. Please help us abide by this policy by monitoring what your child wears to school. Due to the light dress for hot weather outside, we would like to suggest that you send a sweater, sweatshirt or light jacket for your child’s comfort in the classroom.  You may also send a water bottle to keep in the classroom, especially during this hot weather.

Have a fun and safe remainder of the summer holidays. I will see you soon.

Go Hawks,

Julie Nelson, Principal
